What to include
A few details help us find the problem faster.
- The BotLegger version you are running and when it started.
- Your platform and its version: macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS or Android.
- The steps that lead to the problem, and what you expected to happen instead.
- Screenshots of any error messages, with private details covered.
Never send API keys, passwords, or tokens. We will never ask for them. If one appears in a screenshot or log, cover it first, and replace any key you have already shared.
Getting started
Three steps from download to your first bot.
Download BotLegger
Get the app for your computer from the download page.
Add an API key
Open Settings → Models, choose a provider, and paste its API key. The provider’s page has a Get API key button that opens its key portal. You can also use the Ollama app on your own computer, which needs no key.
Start chatting
Pick a bot, type what you want done in the message box, and send it. Give the bot tools and tasks as you go.
FAQ
Common questions
Which AI providers can I use?
Ten: Anthropic, DeepSeek, Ollama (cloud), OpenAI, Gemini, xAI, Groq, OpenRouter, Mistral, and the Ollama app running on your own computer. Add a key for any of them in Settings → Models and pick a provider per bot. Provider usage is billed by the provider, not by BotLegger.
Where is my data stored?
On your device. Your library of bots, chats, memories, tasks, and workspace files is in a BotLegger folder inside your Documents folder (~/Documents/BotLegger/) on macOS, Windows, and Linux. In Settings → General you can choose another folder or open this one.
The app keeps its own working state in a separate folder, which sync tools and backups leave alone:
- macOS:
~/Library/Application Support/com.botlegger.app/ - Windows:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\com.botlegger.app\ - Linux:
$XDG_DATA_HOME/com.botlegger.app/, or~/.local/share/com.botlegger.app/
On iOS and Android the library lives in the app’s own Documents folder. API keys and sign-in tokens go in your system’s credential store, not in these folders.
How do I back up my bots or move to a new computer?
Open Settings → General → Reset & data and choose Back up my bots. It writes one zip file with every bot, its memory, chats, tasks, and workspace, plus your skills, rules, and tools. On the new device choose Restore a backup to add those bots. The zip is not encrypted, so keep it somewhere private. Provider API keys and connected accounts are never included, so enter your keys and reconnect your accounts on the new device.
What is different on iPhone and Android?
The same bots, chats, and tasks work on phones. These things differ:
- Phones run no shell commands or local MCP servers. Python, document, and network tools still work.
- The terminal
botcommand andbot serveare for computers. - Local Ollama models need the Ollama app, which phones do not have.
- You can connect to a cloud computer you already have, but not create one from a phone.
- Enter starts a new line in a message; use the send button to send.
- Deleting the app deletes its data.
How do approvals work?
Before a bot sends, creates, changes, or deletes something through a connected account, such as sending an email or deleting a file, the chat shows what it wants to do and offers Allow once, Always allow, or Deny. If you do not answer within 60 seconds, the action is denied. Always allow covers one bot, one tool, one kind of action, and one destination, so sending to a different address asks again.
How do I connect my Google or Microsoft account?
Open Settings → Plugins, open a Google or Microsoft plugin, and choose Connect. It asks how to connect:
- Connect with BotLegger signs in through BotLegger’s own app. Microsoft works with work, school, and personal accounts.
- Connect with Composio goes through your own free Composio account.
- Connect with your own client ID uses an OAuth app you registered yourself.
While Google reviews BotLegger’s access to Gmail and Google Drive, those two connect through Composio, your own client ID, or, for Gmail, a Google app password. GitHub connects by signing in or with a personal access token.
You can see and revoke what you granted at any time at each provider.
How do I delete my data?
You can reset the app from Settings, delete the data folder, or uninstall the app. Follow the steps on the delete your data page, which also covers revoking connected accounts and deleting a BotLegger account.
