The BotLegger desktop app. The sidebar lists a Home team with Chief of Bots and the Email, Calendar, and Finance bots, a Projects team with Research and Travel, and links to Plugins, Browse Bots, Cloud, and Settings. Chief of Bots summarizes the day's meetings, emails, and a flagged CloudBox charge, and sets a reminder to cancel it.

Browser

A browser your bots can use

For sites with no plugin, bots share a browser you can watch.

The BotLegger desktop app with the bot browser open in a panel beside a bot's chat, showing a web page in one of the bot's tabs.
  • Works like a real browser

    Tabs, history, and sign-ins.

  • Watch, or take over

    Step in whenever you like.

  • You do the signing in

The bot hands you the tab.

  • Asks before it acts

New sites and clicks need your OK.

Devices

Run it where you want, use it everywhere

Run it on your device or in your own cloud.

  • On your device

    • Private to that device.
    • Free local models with Ollama.
    • Runs while the app is open.
  • In your own cloud

    • Works 24/7, even with your laptop closed.
    • Your DigitalOcean account and bill.
    • Only paired devices connect.
  • Everywhere at once

    • Same bots on every device.
    • Link a phone with a QR code.
    • Or use a computer you keep on.

Security

Built to keep you in control

You stay in charge of everything your bots do.

  • You approve

    • Cards ask before any send, change, or delete.
    • No answer in 10 minutes means no.
    • Only you write the rules.
  • Your data stays yours

    • Chats and files stay on your devices.
    • Keys stay in your system's credential store.
    • The account is optional.
  • Mistakes stay contained

    • Commands ask first or run in a sandbox.
    • Outside content cannot give orders.
    • Bots cannot edit their audit log.

Like any AI agent, a bot can make mistakes or be misled by what it reads. Approvals and sandboxes help catch that. You decide what each bot can reach, and you stay responsible for what it does.

Best practices
  • Give each bot only what it needs

Just the plugins, accounts, and folders its job calls for.

  • Read before you click Allow

Check the recipient and the change. Save Always allow for routine actions.

  • Keep commands on a short leash

Give Full access only to a bot you would hand your terminal.

  • Be wary of what bots read

Keep bots that read strangers' content away from accounts that can send, pay, or delete.

  • Limit keys and spending

Set spending limits with your provider, and never paste passwords into a chat.

  • Check in and back up

Look over each bot's Activity, keep backups, and stay up to date.

How each protection works
  • Your data stays yours

Chats, memories, and files stay on your devices or your own cloud computer. Normal chat never passes through a server we run; a cloud model sees only what you send the provider you chose.

  • Keys stay locked away

API keys and account tokens live in your system's credential store, and the app only ever shows their last four characters.

  • An account that knows almost nothing

The BotLegger account is optional and holds only your email and devices. Error reports are sent only if you turn them on.

  • Asks before it acts

Before a bot sends, changes, or deletes anything, a card in the chat says what it wants to do and waits for your OK; no answer in 10 minutes means no. Only you write rules.

  • Outside content cannot give orders

Pages, emails, files, and messages relayed from chat apps reach the model marked as outside content. After reading them, changes to a bot's memory, tasks, and skills ask first.

  • A browser that stays in its lane

Bots ask before they open a new site or click and type on one, sign-ins stay in the browser's own profile, and pages can never reach your home network.

  • Commands on a short leash

By default every command is shown and runs only if you approve it, or you can let a bot run commands in a sandbox that hides your keys and credentials. Python runs with no network.

  • An audit log bots cannot touch

Commands, file writes, outbound actions, and approvals are recorded in each bot's Activity, where no bot can read or edit them.

Every release is scanned and comes with a signed report.

Never send API keys, passwords, or tokens. We will never ask for them, so cover any that show in a screenshot or log.

Common questions

Is BotLegger free?

Yes, the app is free to download and use. You bring your own API keys, so the AI providers you choose bill you directly for model usage.

Do I need an API key?

Yes, to use a cloud model. Setup asks for one key from any supported provider, and you can skip that step and add a key later in Settings. You can also use Ollama models for free on your own computer.

Where is my data stored?

On your device. Your bots, chats, memories, tasks, and workspace files are in a BotLegger folder in your Documents folder on Mac, Windows, and Linux (Settings → General can move it), and in the app's own Documents folder on iPhone and Android. The app keeps its working state in your system's app-data folder, and API keys and sign-in tokens in your system's credential store. When a bot uses a cloud AI provider, the relevant conversation content is sent to that provider.

Which platforms does it run on?

macOS 14 or later, Windows 11 or Server 2019 and later, Debian 12 or 13 and Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04 or 26.04 on x86_64, iOS 16 or later, and Android 7.0 or later. Shell commands and the terminal command are desktop-only.

Does it need an account?

No. The app offers a free BotLegger account when it first starts, and Not now skips it on every platform. An account stores only your email and the devices you signed in on, so we can tell you about updates. Services you connect, such as Google or GitHub, have their own sign-in.

Which apps and services can bots use?

Gmail, Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Calendar, Tasks, and Photos; Outlook, OneDrive, Excel, and Teams; GitHub, GitLab, Slack, Discord, Telegram, WhatsApp, Twilio, Cloudflare DNS, DigitalOcean, Apple Reminders and Contacts, Obsidian, social networks, SSH to your own servers, and any MCP app such as Notion, Linear, or Stripe. A bot asks before it sends, changes, or deletes anything, unless you chose Always allow for that action.

Can bots use websites?

Yes. Bots search the web and read pages, and for sites that need JavaScript, clicks, or a sign-in they share a browser of their own in the desktop app or on your cloud computer. It keeps the sites you sign in to there, shows every tab in a panel beside the chat, and asks before a bot opens a new site or clicks and types on one. When a page needs a password or a code, the bot hands you the tab.

Can my bots keep working when my computer is off?

Yes, on a server. Run bot serve on a computer that stays on, or create a cloud computer in your own DigitalOcean account from the desktop app. Its bots keep running tasks and answering messages, and your desktop and phone apps connect to it.

How do approvals work?

Before a bot sends, creates, changes, or deletes something through a connected account, such as sending an email or deleting a file, the chat shows what it wants to do and offers Allow once, Always allow, or Deny. If you do not answer within 10 minutes, the action is denied. Always allow covers one bot, one tool, one kind of action, and one destination, so sending to a different address asks again.

How do I connect my Google or Microsoft account?

Open Settings → Plugins, open the plugin, and choose Connect. Microsoft plugins sign in through BotLegger's own app, with work, school, and personal accounts. Google plugins connect through your own free Composio account while Google reviews BotLegger's own sign-in: Connect signs you in to Composio and then links your Google account there. GitHub connects by signing in or with a personal access token. You can see and revoke what you granted at any time at each provider.

How do I back up my bots or move to a new computer?

Open Settings → General → Reset and data and choose Back up my bots. It writes one zip file with every bot, its memory, chats, tasks, and workspace, plus your skills, rules, and tools. On the new device choose Restore a backup to add those bots. The zip is not encrypted, so keep it somewhere private. API keys and connected accounts are never included, so enter your keys and reconnect your accounts on the new device.

What is different on iPhone and Android?

The same bots, chats, and tasks work on phones. Phones run no shell commands or local MCP servers, though Python, document, and network tools still work. The bot command and bot serve are for computers, local Ollama models need the Ollama app, which phones do not have, and you can connect to a cloud computer you already have but not create one from a phone. Deleting the app deletes its data.

How do I delete my data?

Reset the app from Settings, delete the data folder, or uninstall the app. The steps at https://botlegger.com/delete-account/ also cover revoking connected accounts and deleting a BotLegger account.
